This role offers a unique opportunity to design and build backend systems that power high-volume, real-time applications in a fast-paced, innovative environment. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the development and optimization of distributed systems and data pipelines, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, reliable, and maintainable solutions. You will have the autonomy to solve complex technical challenges while mentoring junior engineers and shaping best practices across the team. The position emphasizes both technical ownership and proactive contribution to system architecture, performance, and operational efficiency. You will be part of a collaborative, remote-first engineering team focused on delivering tangible impact to end-users and business outcomes.
Accountabilities:
Design, implement, and optimize backend systems, distributed services, and infrastructure solutions to meet business and technical objectives.Collaborate with product, data, and operations teams to provide technical feasibility assessments and actionable recommendations for new features and system enhancements.Monitor system performance and reliability, proactively addressing bottlenecks, outages, and performance issues.Conduct code reviews, provide mentorship, and guide junior engineers, including structured knowledge-sharing sessions.Improve CI/CD pipelines, automate deployments, and implement best practices to increase engineering efficiency and reduce operational workload.Participate in post-mortems and implement long-term fixes to prevent repeat incidents.Champion engineering culture by leading technical discussions, hackathons, and collaborative initiatives that strengthen team engagement and technical excellence.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in STEM or equivalent, with 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience.Professional proficiency in Golang and JVM-based languages (Java, Kotlin, or Scala).Proven experience building distributed systems, real-time data pipelines, and high-volume telemetry solutions (Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS).Hands-on experience with IoT device communication protocols and interfacing with hardware systems.Strong expertise in CI/CD (Jenkins/GitHub Actions) and observability tools (Datadog/Grafana).Experience conducting post-mortems and participating in on-call rotations for critical incidents.Ability to document technical designs, contribute to roadmaps, and advocate solutions to stakeholders.Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills in remote and cross-functional teams.Willingness to travel approximately twice a year.Highly desirable: experience with Kotlin, Avro, Flink, Hadoop frameworks, geospatial and IoT systems, and real-time streaming architectures.
