About the role:
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer II (Backend) who can quickly understand, stabilize, and take full ownership of architecting, developing, and optimizing our backend systems. This role will be responsible for driving major new releases in 2026 and beyond.
You will serve as the go-to expert for all backend matters, owning everything from day-to-day operations and system reliability to designing and delivering large-scale upcoming features.
What you will do:
- Own the backend end-to-end
- Act as the primary owner for all backend systems in this Fintech application
- Make technical decisions and drive execution independently
- Take over and stabilize an existing system
- Understand architecture, codebase, and data flows
- Ensure a smooth transition from vendor to in-house team
- Operate and improve production systems
- Troubleshoot issues across application, infrastructure, and databases
- Improve reliability, performance, and observability (Dynatrace or similar)
- Deliver major features
- Lead backend implementation for large, business-critical features
- Balance speed with long-term maintainability
- Work with infrastructure and data
- Manage deployments on Kubernetes
- Work across Linux and Windows environments
- Maintain and optimize PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MS SQL
- Raise the engineering bar
- Introduce pragmatic improvements in code quality, CI/CD, and monitoring
- Add structure and documentation where needed
- Collaborate with stakeholders
- Work closely with product and frontend teams
- Translate business needs into practical technical solutions
What you will need:
- Experience: 7+ years in backend engineering
- Core stack: Strong Java experience or a similar language experience.
- Databases: Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MS SQL
- Experience with Kubernetes and containerized deployments
- Strong experience owning and evolving production systems
- Strong debugging and query optimization skills
- Production & troubleshooting
- Experience with monitoring/observability tools (e.g., Dynatrace)
- Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex production issues
- System ownership mindset
- Comfortable being the single point of ownership for backend
- Takes initiative, makes decisions, and drives things to completion
- Able to work with imperfect systems and improve them incrementally
- System understanding
- Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar codebases and architectures
Nice to have:
- Fintech or regulated domain experience (strong plus)
- Experience taking over systems from vendors or third parties
- Experience improving legacy systems or monoliths
- Familiarity with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP)
