This role offers the chance to work on high-impact federal health platforms, modernizing and sustaining critical portal experiences for millions of users. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead front-end development within the Liferay DXP environment, focusing on improving usability, performance, and accessibility. You will collaborate across teams to ensure engineering quality, mentor peers, and leverage AI tools to streamline workflows, code generation, and debugging. The position emphasizes technical leadership without direct people management, allowing you to set standards and drive innovation. Accountabilities:
Design, develop, and maintain Liferay DXP themes, portlets, fragments, and FreeMarker templatesModernize legacy JSP-based implementations while ensuring stability of critical user workflowsBuild and enhance front-end experiences, with emphasis on Secure Messaging and veteran-facing interfacesDebug complex issues in the Liferay request lifecycle, OSGi modules, and portal configurationsApply secure coding, session handling, and accessibility (Section 508/WCAG) best practicesLeverage AI tools to improve code quality, documentation, unit testing, and overall engineering productivityContribute to CI/CD pipelines and collaborate with QA and product teams to validate portal enhancementsRequirements:
6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 6+ years on Liferay DXP (7.x preferred)Strong expertise in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Java web fundamentals (JSP/Servlets), and FreeMarker templatingExperience with front-end frameworks such as JSF/Facelets or equivalent Liferay UI librariesProven ability to debug portal lifecycle issues, OSGi module interactions, and complex portal configurationsHands-on experience modernizing enterprise portal applicationsProficiency using AI tooling to accelerate development workflows and improve code qualityAbility to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearancePreferred: experience with Section 508 accessibility standards, secure session handling, SSO authentication, CI/CD pipelines, and prior support of VA digital health platformsBenefits:
