Senior Software Engineer (PHP/Symfony)

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer (PHP/Symfony) to join our team. This role is focused on tackling a large-scale technical debt initiative—modernizing a legacy PHP/Symfony application to current long-term support versions.

Our ideal teammate is a senior-level, full-stack engineer who thrives in open-source environments, is comfortable working across the LAMP stack and Angular, and brings an AI-first mindset to development. You don’t just use AI tools—you critically evaluate and refine their output to ensure high-quality, production-ready code.

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead the upgrade of a legacy application from Symfony 3.4 to Symfony 8 and PHP 7.3 to PHP 8.1.
• Identify, resolve, and eliminate deprecated code across the codebase.
• Execute and validate full regression test suites to ensure system stability post-upgrade.
• Work across the stack using PHP (Symfony), MySQL, and Angular (AngularJS + modern Angular).
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs supporting application functionality.
• Review, validate, and refine AI-generated code, ensuring accuracy, performance, and maintainability.
• Collaborate closely with existing teams in an agile environment (standups, sprint planning, etc.).
• Take ownership of deliverables and drive work independently with minimal oversight.

Skills and Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience (mid-level to senior only).
• Strong expertise in PHP and Symfony.
• Hands-on experience with the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).
• Proficiency in Angular (AngularJS and/or modern Angular).
• Solid experience designing and working with RESTful APIs.
• Proven experience handling technical debt, including framework upgrades, deprecation cleanup, and regression testing.
• Strong code review and validation skills, especially with AI-assisted development workflows.
• Demonstrated AI-first/AI-forward mindset—leveraging AI as a core part of development, not just experimentation.
• Experience working with open-source technologies and scripting environments.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt across tools and frameworks.
• Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Other Information 

The work hours will be approximately 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST, depending on workload, with the occasional late night when a tight deadline calls for it. We work for security-conscious clients, thus background checks will be required. Salary dependent upon experience.
